This course presents an overview of the injury and poisoning codes categorized to Chapter 19 of ICD-10-CM. The similarities and differences between S and T codes in Chapter 19 will also be highlighted.


Lesson 1: Overview

  • Identify the starting point for external cause coding
  • Apply the external cause hierarchy to ICD-10-CM coding scenarios
  • Identify situations in which an external cause code would be used

Lesson 2: VWXY Codes

  • List the letters that are used as primary characters for external cause codes
  • Identify the six elements of external cause coding

Lesson 3: Chapter 20 Structure and Format

  • Apply 7th characters to Chapter 20 codes for various episodes of care
  • Differentiate between initial and subsequent episodes of care and sequela of external causes

Lesson 4: Coding in ICD-10-CM

  • List two unique ICD-10-CM external cause codes
  • Determine from medical record documentation whether an injury was due to an accident, self-inflicted, assault, or undetermined
