Description
This course covers the procedures and codes found in the Integumentary subsection of CPT. From excision of lesions to repair of wounds to breast procedures, this series is a comprehensive overview of the codes along with procedure descriptions and just-in-time anatomy tutorials. Whether you are new to CPT coding or an experienced coder, there is something here for you!
Objectives:
Part 1: Skin Repairs, Tissue Rearrangement, Flaps, and Skin Grafts
- Distinguish between limited and extensive undermining
- Differentiate between simple, intermediate, and complex skin repair
- Assign codes for multiple skin repairs
- Distinguish between local, regional, and distant flaps
- Calculate the square centimeters of a defect
- Determine when to use codes for pedicle flaps vs. adjacent tissue transfer
- Differentiate between autograft, cultured tissue autograft, and skin substitute graft
Part 2: Skin Biopsy and Excision and Destruction of Lesions
- Differentiate between tangential, punch, and incisional biopsy
- Determine when to use multiple biopsy codes
- Recognize the definition of a tissue block in Mohs micrographic surgery
- Differentiate between incisional biopsy and excision
- Recognize the code ranges for benign vs. malignant lesions
- Identify wound size based on documentation of lesions and margins
- Determine when excision of a lesion is included in the repair code
- Assign codes for excision of multiple lesions
- Determine when to use codes for shaving of lesions and removal of skin tags rather than the benign/malignant lesion excision codes
- Identify methods for destroying skin lesions
Part 3: Other Procedures on the Skin
- Identify the documentation elements necessary for reporting wound debridement procedures
- Determine the deepest level of debridement
- Distinguish wound debridement codes in the Integumentary section from those in the Medicine section
- Differentiate between codes for debridement and excision of pressure ulcers
- Identify parts of the nail and nail bed
- Compare and contrast codes for excision, debridement, and trimming of nails
- Distinguish I&D from excision of pilonidal cyst
- Recognize codes for insertion, replacement, and removal of tissue expanders not associated with breast reconstruction
- Identify codes for placement of insertion of non-biodegradable drug delivery implant
Part 4: Breast Procedures
- Differentiate between needle core and fine needle aspiration biopsy of the breast
- Determine when multiple breast biopsy codes can be assigned
- Differentiate between simple, radical, and modified radical mastectomy
- Assign a code for mastectomy for gynecomastia
- Assign codes for second-stage delayed breast reconstruction
- Differentiate between types of flap reconstruction procedures
