Description

This course covers the anatomy of the spinal column and the spinal cord. Common procedures performed on these structures are explained. Various approaches, devices and qualifiers that are commonly assigned when coding procedures performed on this system are explored in detail. Additional services that are typically encountered with spinal surgery cases are highlighted in this course.

 

Objectives:

Lesson 1: Anatomy of the Spine

  • Name the body parts associated with the spinal column and spinal cord
  • Label the individual body parts associated with the spinal column and spinal cord
  • Identify the naming conventions for the vertebrae and the vertebral joints
  • Differentiate between body parts found in the ICD-10-PCS tables of the nervous system, bones and joints

Lesson 2: Approaches, Devices, and Qualifiers

  • Explain the various approaches used to access the spinal column and spinal cord
  • Identify the devices commonly placed during spinal procedures
  • Assign the qualifiers used to code procedures performed on the spinal column

Lesson 3: Spinal Procedures

  • Identify how common spinal cord, spinal nerve and meningeal procedures are performed
  • Assign root operations to commonly performed spinal cord procedures
  • Choose ICD-10-PCS character values for spinal cord procedures

Lesson 4: Procedures Performed on the Spinal Column

  • Identify how common spinal column procedures are performed
  • Assign root operations to commonly performed spinal column procedures
  • Choose ICD-10-PCS character values for spinal column procedures

Lesson 5: Spinal Fusion

  • Explain how spinal fusion procedures are performed on various levels of the spine
  • Apply spinal fusion guidelines regarding the coding of combination devices placed during spinal fusion surgery
  • Choose ICD-10-PCS character values for fusion procedures

Lesson 6: Substances Introduced to the Spine

  • Code substances that can be introduced into the spine during procedures
  • Apply the correct root operation for these injection procedures
