Haugen Consulting Group is excited to provide this 2-part series on coding for vascular interventional radiology (VIR) procedures. While VIR procedures are widely discussed for CPT, many inpatient coders are left scratching their heads. In part 1, we will explore the PCS tables for angioplasty, stenting, atherectomy, and thrombectomy and thrombolysis. We will also talk about imaging codes, documentation requirements, and coding guidelines. In the second part of this series, we will address embolization procedures, aneurysm repair, AV fistula procedures, and more!

  • Apply coding guidelines for procedures performed on bridging lesions
  • Recognize thrombectomy performed using a stent retriever
  • Select the approach for VIR procedures
  • Select the root operation for interventional procedures performed on bypass grafts
  • Assign codes to procedure reports
  • Determine when to use the root operation Occlusion for control of bleeding
  • Distinguish between root operations Restriction and Occlusion for coding aneurysm repairs
  • Differentiate between fenestrated and bifurcated endoprostheses used for aneurysm repair
  • Identify VIR procedures coded to the New Technology section
