External Causes of Morbidity




This module provides an overview of coding external causes in ICD-10-CM such as codes for environmental events, circumstances causing injury, and other adverse effects.  This module will also provide coding practice.


•Identify the starting point for external cause coding.
•Apply the external cause hierarchy to ICD-10-CM coding scenarios.
•Identify situations in which an external cause code would be used.
•Identify the letters of the alphabet used as the primary characters for External Cause codes.
•Apply 7th character extension to Chapter 20 codes for various episodes of care.
•Differentiate between initial and subsequent episodes of care and sequela of external causes.
•Discuss the five categories of external cause codes.
•Apply codes to all five categories of external cause codes.
•Apply ICD-10-CM coding principles and guidelines to selected clinical scenarios with external causes.
•Given a diagnostic statement or case study, assign ICD-10-CM codes.
