CM: Signs and Symptoms




This module provides an overview of the codes in ICD-10-CM Chapter 18 for symptoms, signs and other atypical findings on clinical tests. This module reviews codeable documentation and the guidelines for coding signs and symptoms.


•Identify the differences between a sign and a symptom.
•Determine the appropriateness of coding signs and symptoms.
•Utilize the Glascow coma scale to assign coma scale codes.
•State the minimum number of codes needed to report severe sepsis.
•Identify various types of codes available for coding abnormal laboratory findings in specimens.
•Apply ICD-10-CM coding principles and guidelines to selected clinical scenarios for signs, symptoms, and abnormal clinical findings.
•Given a diagnostic statement or case study, assign ICD-10-CM codes.
