Introduction to ICD-10 PCS



This module introduces the framework for coding with the ICD-10-PCS (referred to as PCS) coding system, including the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 (HIPAA)) requirements for the use of the system. This introduction includes the character definitions, format and structure of ICD-10-PCS.


•Explain events leading to the implementation of the system.
•Identify the ICD-10-PCS characters and their meaning.
•Describe the format and structure of the PCS system.
•Review the types of additional information available in the index that can be used in the coding process.
•Given a procedure, successfully utilize the Alphabetic Index and PCS Tables to assign a code.
