Overview
This course will provide an overview of pertinent anatomy as well as the root operations and coding tips for assigning PCS codes to trauma-related procedures. Lesson 1 provides a brief review of body systems often impacted by trauma – namely, skin, subcutaneous tissue, musculoskeletal structures, and certain internal organs. Lesson 2 focuses on the root operations most often used when building PCS codes for trauma-related procedures. Lesson 3 will describe several of those procedures, ranging from those that are fairly minor to major life-saving procedures involving severe trauma.
Objectives
Lesson 1: Anatomy of Body Systems Affected by Trauma
- Identify the layers of skin and subcutaneous tissue
- Identify the structures of the hip, knee, shoulder and foot
- Distinguish between peritoneal from retroperitoneal organs
Lesson 2: Root Operations in Trauma Coding
- Name a root operation that is associated with repairing traumatic amputations and avulsions
- Identify two root operations commonly associated with trauma and two that are not commonly trauma-related
Lesson 3: Trauma-Related Procedures
- Assign the PCS code for repair of an avulsed kidney
- Identify the root operations for some common trauma-related procedures
