Description

This course describes the time immediately before birth (the 20th to 28th week of gestation) through the first 28 days after birth. Codes in this chapter are never used on the mother’s record. This chapter has several codes that can be used when a newborn is observed for a suspected condition, but after study that condition is ruled out.

 

Objectives:

Lesson 1: Introduction to Perinatal Coding

  • Identify the type of patient record that will utilize P codes
  • Apply chapter specific guidelines and use of pertinent Z codes
  • Select conditions that should be coded from a newborn’s record

Lesson 2: Perinatal Conditions

  • Code conditions of the newborn that are due to maternal complications
  • Assign and sequence codes for premature birth
  • Identify reporting criteria for abnormal findings on neonatal screening
  • Assign and sequence codes related to birth trauma

Lesson 3: Common Conditions

  • Distinguish between transitory tachypnea of the newborn and other types of newborn respiratory distress
  • Define different types of neonatal aspiration
  • Determine the categories of codes to use for newborn sepsis
  • Assign codes for neonatal jaundice

Lesson 4: Other Disorders

  • Determine when to code for convulsions versus epilepsy in newborns
  • Identify when to code P95 for Stillbirth
  • Distinguish between different types of newborn withdrawal
  • Assign codes for tobacco exposure in newborns
