Description
Shoulder procedures, including rotator cuff repair, impingement surgery, and debridement, have been a pain point for many coders over the years. Determining which procedures are bundled and which can be coded separately is complicated by conflicting advice from the AMA, CMS, and medical society. In this presentation, we will take an in-depth look at shoulder procedures and how to code them.
Objectives:
- Review anatomy of the shoulder joint
- Differentiate between arthroscopic and open CPT codes
- Compare and contrast limited and extensive debridement
- Address variations in coding guidelines and clinical scenarios presented by the American Association of Orthopedic Surgeons (AAOS), Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and American Medical Association (AMA)
