Description

The road to coding spinal fusions and other procedures is a sound knowledge of anatomy of the vertebrae, spinal cord, nerve roots, and intervertebral joints.  Join us for the first in a series of webinars addressing CPT and PCS coding for spinal procedures.  This webinar will present a thorough review of the anatomy of the spine and discuss common spinal disorders that may require spinal fusion.  This is not your average anatomy session!  This will set you up for success in our future CPT and PCS spinal fusion webinars.

Objectives:

  • Differentiate between vertebral segments and joints
  • Identify components of the anterior and posterior columns of the spine
  • Label the individual components of a vertebral segment
  • Differentiate between spondylosis, spondylolysis, and spondylolisthesis

Presenters

Deanna Upston, CPMA, CPC, COSC

Deanna is a consultant for The Haugen Consulting Group with over 20 years of health care industry experience.  Her introduction was through medical assisting, which she enjoyed for several years. Once she was established at a surgeon’s office, she started coding their surgical cases and discovered that was her favorite part of the day. Deanna has experience working on the professional fee side of coding, audit, education and compliance serving coders and physicians.  She has put together multiple education sessions for both provider and coder.  She also has experience working as an analyst in which she validated the integrity of editing logic during the implementation of claim scrubbing software.  She is a Certified Professional Coder (CPC), Certified Professional Medical Auditor (CPMA), and Certified Orthopedic Surgery Coder (COSC).

Kristi Pollard, RHIT, CCS, CPC, CIRCC, AHIMA-Approved ICD-10-CM/PCS Trainer

Kristi is a senior consultant with more than 20 years of industry experience and is the author of a delightfully funny blog dedicated to the profession of coding.  Kristi has an extensive background in coding education and consulting and is a national speaker on topics related to ICD-10 and CPT coding as well as code-based reimbursement.  She has designed and developed training programs for inpatient and outpatient hospital-based coding including vascular interventional radiology, interventional cardiology, orthopedics and obstetrics.

Kristi has served the Colorado Health Information Management Association (CHIMA) as board Director, co-chair of the Data Quality Committee, and co-chair for the ICD-10 Task Force. She is also a past president of the Northern Colorado Health Information Management Association (NCHIMA). Kristi devotes extra time to mentoring current and future coders through her Coder Coach blog and is the proud recipient of the 2011 AHIMA Triumph Award for Mentoring. She has also received awards from CHIMA for Distinguished Member (2018) and Outstanding Volunteer (2013) and from AHIMA for Roundtable Achievement in Coding Excellence (RACE).
