Description

Diagnostic coding has a unique set of challenges in the outpatient setting.  Short stays mean limited documentation and coding rules differ from the inpatient setting.  Add in varying types of outpatient accounts (same-day surgery, ED, and ancillary services) and the complexities of meeting medical necessity while compliantly coding and national guidelines for screening exams, and the result is often confusion.  This session will go back to the grassroots of outpatient diagnostic coding and address the funky nuances that make this “simple” area of coding not-so-simple after all.

Objectives:

  • Compare/contrast reason for visit and first-listed diagnoses
  • Review coding guidelines applicable to the outpatient setting
  • Differentiate between aftercare and follow-up
  • Identify what to code when the patient presents without a diagnosis or condition
  • Recognize steps to take when payer guidelines conflict with official coding guidelines

Target Audience

  • Facility outpatient coders
  • Billing professionals
  • Revenue integrity professionals
  • Coding compliance professionals
  • Coding compliance managers
