On-Demand Webinar Release: Principles of Principal Diagnosis Selection

One of the most challenging aspects of inpatient coding is identification of the principal diagnosis. And as more services are moved from the outpatient to the inpatient setting, this becomes a more daunting task because the inpatients are “sicker” than they used to be. In this webinar, we familiarize learners with the official coding guidelines related to principal diagnosis selection, review Coding Clinic advice, and offer practical examples for code sequencing.

• Recognize the UHDDS definition of principal diagnosis
• Apply instructional, includes, and excludes notes to determine code sequencing
• Select the principal diagnosis (PDx) when more than one diagnosis potentially meets the PDx definition.
