This course covers the coding guidelines that provide assistance during the coding process. This course also provides valuable information about the use of the index in locating the correct code table and body part values while coding.

 

Objectives:

Lesson 1: Coding Conventions

  • Select the correct root operation and body part, based on the guidance from the Index
  • Identify when a coding guideline is available to assist in the coding process
  • Demonstrate the application of the guidelines in achieving correct codes
  • Select the correct number of codes to describe the case, based on the application of the guidelines

Lesson 2: Medical-Surgical, Body System, and Root Operations

  • Determine which body system should be chosen for coding
  • Specific root operation guidelines

Lesson 3: Medical-Surgical, Body Parts, Approaches, Devices

  • Reference the guidelines for direction related to assigning body part values
  • Study the differences in structures surrounding a joint
  • Review the definition of upper and lower related to the intestinal tract

Lesson 4: Additional Guidelines

  • Define the term Products of Conception
  • Name the three body part values associated with the products of conception
  • Explore the Radiation Therapy and New Technology section guidelines
  • Identify procedures coded within the OB section of ICD-10-PCS
  • Review Guideline for Selection of Principal Procedure
  • Review use of the PCS Index
