Description

This course will present an overview of ICD-10-CM Chapter 5 for Mental, Behavioral, and Neurodevelopmental Disorders. This course covers disorders due to known physiological conditions, disorders due to psychoactive substance use, Schizophrenia and Mood Disorders, and finally Stress-Related and Other Disorders. This course highlights pertinent information about mental disorders, coding structure, and official guidelines that will help you with ICD-10-CM coding.

 

Objectives:

Lesson 1: Overview of Mental Disorders

  • Identify the code blocks in Chapter 5 of the ICD-10-CM code set
  • Name key concepts for mental disorder coding that will simplify the coding process
  • List the topics covered in the ICD-10-CM official guidelines that will clarify how to use the codes in this area

Lesson 2: Disorders Due to Known Physiological Conditions (F01-F09)

  • Describe the types of physiological conditions that can cause mental disorders
  • Apply sequencing guidelines for codes for mental disorders with underlying physiological conditions
  • Identify documentation required in order to assign combination codes showing related conditions

Lesson 3: Disorders Due to Psychoactive Substance Abuse (F10-F19)

  • Differentiate between substance use, abuse, and dependence
  • Determine when to assign a code for substance use

Lesson 4: Schizophrenia and Mood Disorders (F20-F39)

  • Identify some commonly coded disorders such as schizophrenia, schizoaffective disorder, bipolar disorder, and major depressive disorder
  • Describe important features of these codes
  • Apply Excludes1 and Excludes2 notes correctly when assigning schizophrenia-related codes

Lesson 5: Stress-Related and Other Disorders (F40-F99)

  • Become familiar with ICD-10-CM codes for some commonly coded disorders, including phobias, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), pain disorders, and intellectual disabilities
  • Use the official ICD-10-CM guideline for pain disorders associated with physiological conditions to assign the correct codes for pain disorders
