Introduction

This course builds the foundational knowledge and skills for success when reporting procedures on the musculoskeletal system of the body. Join us as we review musculoskeletal anatomy and a walk-through of the structure of the musculoskeletal subsection of CPT. This course is recommended before taking either the Procedure Coding for Orthopedic Surgery: Upper Limbs or Procedure Coding for Orthopedic Surgery: Lower Limbs courses.

Objectives:

Lesson 1: Orthopedic Anatomy and Directional Terms

  • Label the structures of a joint
  • Differentiate between ligaments and tendons
  • Differentiate between distal and proximal

L2 Structure of the CPT Musculoskeletal Subsection

  • Locate ranges of codes for specific body regions.
  • Identify code ranges for open vs. arthroscopic joint procedures.
  • Apply directional terms to locate codes for limb procedures

L3 Application of Casts and Strapping

  • Distinguish between fracture care and application of immobilization devices
  • Differentiate between static and dynamic finger splints
  • Determine when a code should be assigned for splint application

Shoulder and Elbows

This course is all about shoulders and elbows! Lesson 1, begins with a discussion on shoulder anatomy and incision and excision procedures. Lesson 2 continues the fun by exploring shoulder repairs and fracture and dislocation treatment. Lesson 3 moves further down the arm to the elbow where we will review pertinent anatomy as well as incision and excision procedures. Lesson 4 completes the course with a discussion on elbow repairs and fracture and dislocation treatment.

Objectives:

Lesson 1: Shoulder Anatomy and Incision/Excision

  • Label the bones and joints of a shoulder
  • Assign codes for excision procedures of the shoulder

Lesson 2: Shoulder Repairs, Fractures and Dislocations

  • Identify procedures that are integral to a subacromial decompression
  • Distinguish open from arthroscopic shoulder repair procedures
  • Differentiate between open and closed fracture treatment

Lesson 3: Elbow Anatomy and Incision/Excision Procedures

  • Identify the anatomical structures of the elbow joint
  • Differentiate between limited and extensive elbow joint debridement

Lesson 4: Elbow Repairs and Fracture/Dislocation Treatment

  • Assign codes for treatment of a nonunion or malunion of a fracture
  • Differentiate between the types of distal humerus fractures
  • Assign a code for reduction of nursemaid’s elbow

Wrist and Hand

This course is all about wrists and hands! In lesson 1, we discuss wrist anatomy and incision and excision procedures before diving into wrist repairs and fracture and dislocation treatment procedures. In lesson 2 we’ll give you a hand-with-hand anatomy followed by lesson 3 where we discuss incision and excision procedures performed on the hands and fingers. Lesson 4 rounds out our education on orthopedic procedures on the upper extremities by presenting hand repair and fracture and dislocation procedures.

Objectives:

Lesson 1: Wrist Anatomy and Incision/Excision Procedures

  • Identify the carpal bones of the wrist
  • Distinguish flexor tendons from extensor tendons
  • Recognize various levels of forearm and wrist amputation, and assign a code for carpal tunnel release

Lesson 2: Wrist Repairs and Fracture/Dislocation Treatments

  • Identify various types of fracture codes for the radius and ulna
  • Differentiate between intra-articular and extra-articular fractures

Lesson 3: Hand Anatomy and Incision/Excision Procedures

  • Identify the bones and joints of the hand
  • Decipher and code an op report for Dupuytren’s contracture
  • Differentiate between fasciotomy and fasciectomy

Lesson 4: Hand Repairs and Fracture/Dislocation Treatment

  • Recognize zone 2 of the hand
  • Apply codes to a procedure report for tendon repair
  • Assign codes for fractures of the hand and finger

Hip and Knee

This course is all about hips and knees! The first two lessons cover hip anatomy, incision and excision, and repair and replacement procedures. Falling to our knees in Lessons 3 and 4 the discussion continues on those common procedures involving the knees. The course concludes with fracture and dislocation treatments from hip to knee.

  • Label the components of pelvis and hip joint
  • Differentiate between total and partial hip arthroplasty and identify various types of fracture fixation devices

Lesson 2: Hip Repairs and Joint Replacement

  • Determine the correct code for hip contracture procedures
  • Assign codes for various hip arthroplasty procedures

Lesson 3: Knee Anatomy and Incision/Excision Procedures

  • Identify key structures of the knee joint
  • Distinguish open from arthroscopic knee procedures

Lesson 4: Knee Repair and Replacement

  • Assign codes to knee arthroscopy procedures
  • Differentiate partial from total knee arthroplasty

Lesson 5: Fracture and Dislocation for the Pelvis and Upper Leg

  • Identify various types of fracture fixation devices
  • Assign codes to fracture procedure reports

  • Recognize various types of ankle fractures

Lesson 3: Foot Anatomy and Incision/Excision Procedures

  • Label an anatomical diagram of the foot
  • Differentiate between fasciotomy and fasciectomy procedures on the foot
  • Code an amputation procedure

Lesson 4: Foot Repairs and Fracture and Dislocation Treatments

  • Label an anatomical diagram of the foot
  • Match bunionectomy codes to their procedure descriptions
  • Determine when to code an arthrotomy procedure when other procedures on the feet are performed
