Description

In this course we take a look at common procedures performed in the emergency department such as laceration repairs, incision and drainage, and foreign body removals… just to name a few. We will take a detailed look at laceration repairs, and other integumentary procedure code guidelines as well as discuss documentation requirements and walk through chart examples to help you feel confident when making your CPT code selections.

Objectives:

  • Define a simple, intermediate, and complex wound closure
  • Identify a simple versus complicated incision and drainage code based the procedure note
  • Select the correct codes for cyst procedures based on documentation

As an ED coder, there has been many discussions at our facility regarding the “extensive cleansing” when the provider documents what looks like a simple lac repair but then always lists extensive cleaning. Some at our facility think that just because it is listed by the provider we need to do intermediate but I never felt comfortable doing this. Glad to have this clarified and will share this with our coding group!
