The Girl in the Window

Every morning, she sits in her cabin tucked deep in the Rockies, laptop open on the table beside a mug of cooling coffee. Her fingers hover over the keyboard, but her eyes wander—always to the same place. Out the window, snow-capped peaks cut the horizon in sharp relief, the late-morning sun warming the tall grasses that sway in the meadow below.

She works in IT—high-paying, high-stress, high-everything—but lately, it feels like her life has been reduced to code commits, conference calls, and endless emails. Each day she tells herself she’ll take the afternoon off, grab a blanket, and stretch out in the meadow to feel the sun kiss her face and the mountain air fill her lungs.

But just as she’s about to shut the laptop and slip away, it happens.

Ding. Another email. Another “urgent” project request. Another reason to stay at the desk while the wild world outside lives on without her.

She dreams of quitting—of walking out that cabin door one morning and not coming back until the stars bloom overhead. But the projects keep coming. The money keeps coming. The digital tether holds her fast.
One day, she promises herself, she’ll choose the mountains over the inbox.
