Description
This course provides a review of the function and structure of the GI tract, as well as related terminology. Learners will review the cells and layers through the digestive system, as well as discuss common diseases and disorders in this system. Topics such as ulcers, infective conditions, Crohn’s disease, obstruction, and volvulus are covered.
Objectives:
Lesson 1: GI Complications and Other Conditions
- Identify different regions of the small and large intestines
- Differentiate between organs within the peritoneal and retroperitoneal cavities
- Recognize codes for digestive complications in ICD-10-CM
Lesson 2: Upper GI System
- Differentiate between different types of peptic ulcers
- Identify locations of hernias on an anatomical diagram
Lesson 3: Intestines, Peritoneum, and Retroperitoneum
- Code for Crohn’s disease coding in ICD-10-CM
- Differentiate between various codes for colon polyps
Lesson 4: Hepatobiliary System and Pancreas
- Identify different levels of liver disease
- Differentiate between acute, chronic, and unspecified cholecystitis
Lesson 5: GI Complications and Other Conditions
- Distinguish between intraoperative and postprocedural complications
- Determine when to assign codes for hematemesis, melena, and other GI hemorrhage

The information on the Duodenal Ulcer was mixed information. It had 2 correct codes the rest were the gastric K25 codes. all should of been K26 codes.
