Description
This course provides a basic understanding of anatomical structures and the purpose of the respiratory system. It begins with an overview of the respiratory system and respiratory diseases. The course provides an opportunity for the learners to apply ICD-10 codes and includes practice coding sessions using clinical case studies. Topics include obstructive lung disease, asthma, acute respiratory failure, and pneumonia types including ventilator-associated pleural effusion.
Objectives:
Lesson 1: Anatomy Overview
- Identify the anatomical structures of the upper and lower respiratory system
- Review respiration and the function of the respiratory system
Lesson 2: Highlights of Chapter 10
- Determine when to code tobacco-related conditions with associated respiratory conditions and select conditions that are classified to the respiratory chapter in ICD-10-CM
Lesson 3: Diseases of the Upper Respiratory System
- Review coding for sinusitis in ICD-10-CM
- Interpret diagnostic statements for influenza and apply coding guidelines
Lesson 4: Other Diseases of the Lower Respiratory System
- Differentiate between ventilator-associated pneumonia and other types of pneumonia in vented patients
- Determine when separate codes for COPD and asthma should be used
- Assign codes for e-cigarette or vape-related lung injury
- Differentiate between underlying causes of hypoxic and hypercapnic respiratory failure
