Skin Repairs
Part 1 lays the foundation for coding of skin procedures with a discussion on various methods of repairing wound defects.
Objectives:
Lesson 1: Skin Repair
- Distinguish between limited and extensive undermining
- Differentiate between simple, intermediate, and complex skin repair
- Assign codes for multiple skin repairs
Lesson 2: Adjacent Tissue Transfer or Rearrangement, Flaps, and Skin Grafts
- Distinguish between local, regional, and distant flaps
- Calculate the square centimeters of a defect
- Determine when to use codes for pedicle flaps vs. adjacent tissue transfer
- Differentiate between autograft, cultured tissue graft, and skin substitute graft

Skin Biopsy and Excision and Destruction of Lesions
Part 2 of the CPT Integumentary System series focuses on skin lesions and the procedures performed to treat them. This course contains 3 lessons and a scored assessment. Lesson 1 covers skin biopsy and Mohs micrographic surgery. Lesson 2 discusses excision of lesions. Lesson 3 outlines destruction and other procedures for lesion removal.
Objectives:
Lesson 1: Skin Biopsy and Mohs Micrographic Surgery
- Differentiate between tangential, punch, and incisional biopsy
- Determine when to use multiple biopsy codes
- Recognize the definition of a tissue block in Mohs micrographic surgery
- Differentiate between incisional biopsy and excision
Lesson 2: Excision of Benign and Malignant Lesions
- Recognize the code ranges for benign vs. malignant lesions
- Identify wound size based on documentation of lesions and margins
- Determine when excision of a lesion is included in the repair code
- Assign codes for multiple excision of lesions
Lesson 3: Destruction and Other Removal of Lesions
- Determine when to use codes for shaving of lesions and removal of skin tags
- Identify methods for destroying skin lesions

Other Procedures
Part 3 of the CPT Integumentary system wraps up the discussion on skin procedures, including debridement, treatment of pressure ulcers, and incision and drainage (I&D) procedures.
Objectives:
Lesson 1: Debridement, Burn, and Pressure Ulcer Procedures
- Identify the documentation elements necessary for reporting wound debridement procedures
- Determine the deepest level of debridement
- Distinguish wound debridement codes in the Integumentary section from those in the Medicine section
- Differentiate between codes for debridement and excision of pressure ulcers
Lesson 2: Procedures on the Nails
- Identify the parts of the nail and nail bed
- Compare and contrast codes for excision, debridement, and trimming of nails
Lesson 3: Procedure involving Introduction, Incision, and Drainage and Pilonidal Cysts
- Distinguish incision and drainage from excision of pilonidal cyst
- Recognize codes for insertion, replacement, and removal of tissue expanders not associated with breast reconstruction
- Identify codes for placement of insertion of non-biodegradable drug delivery implants

656 reviews for Procedure Coding for Integumentary Series
This is the most information I have retained regarding skin procedures. This presentation was very helpful!
Very interesting, very informative, very helpful. thank you!
excellent course. although i am not confident to say expert, i do feel much more confident in coding repairs.
I wish there was a way to print the information from the slides to have a hard copy.
Happy with the course.
this course helped clarify some things for me. definitely not an easy area to code
great content…the pictures and examples were especially helpful
I learned a lot from this course. Thank you!
I think the grafting was more complicated then an outpatient coder needs to know.
awesome
A few questions were quite challenging!
