Arthrodesis and Grafting
In this first course, we will study both arthrodesis and grafting codes. In this course, you will quickly see how grafting is key to spinal fusion coding. This course reviews the different approaches and looks at vertebral anatomy and how levels are counted in code assignment.
Objectives:
Lesson 1: Anatomy, Common Spinal Disorders, Grafting
- Describe what arthrodesis is and why it is done
- Name the four main components in coding spine surgery
- Apply the appropriate grafting codes
Lesson 2: Lateral Extracavity Approach to Arthrodesis
- Recognize the vertebral anatomy
- Describe the lateral extracavity approach to the spine
- Understand how to count vertebral levels
Lesson 3: Anterior Approach to Arthrodesis
- Define “Interbody Technique”
- Identify anterior approaches to the spine
- Identify anterior approach anatomy
Lesson 4: Posterior Approach to Arthrodesis
- Identify the posterior approach anatomy
- Describe the posterior approach codes
- Understand the difference between “interbody” and “posterior/posterolateral”
Lesson 5: Add-on Codes (AOC), Multiple Fusion Techniques
- Apply the add-on codes (AOC)
- Report multiple spine fusions across multiple spinal regions using multiple techniques

Decompression and Corpectomy
This second course of our CPT Spinal Surgery series covers decompression and corpectomy. We know that spinal decompression surgery covers different surgeries that all have the same goal-to relieve the symptoms of spinal nerve compression. Learn more about decompression surgeries, various approach codes, and the intended use of these codes.
Objectives:
Lesson 1: Overview of Spinal Decompression
- Explain what spinal decompression is and why it is done
- Describe each of the procedures associated with spinal decompression
Lesson 2: Posterior Approach Codes
- Recognize the decompression techniques associated with each of the codes
- Identify the intended use of each code
- Explain how to count the levels
Lesson 3: Transpedicular or Costovertebral Approach
- Recognize the approach techniques associated with each of the codes
- Explain how to count the levels
Lesson 4: Anterior or Anterolateral Approach
- Recognize the approach techniques associated with each of the codes
- Identify the intended use of each code
- Explain how to count the levels
Lesson 5: Lateral Extracavity Approach Codes
- Recognize the approach techniques associated with each of the codes

Instrumentation and Devices
The third course in our CPT Spinal Surgery series covers instrumentation and devices. This course explores the purpose and intent of spinal instrumentation as well as the CPT guidelines for instrumentation.
Objectives:
Lesson 1: Instrumentation Overview
- Recognize the purpose of instrumentation
- Define terms associated with instrumentation
- Differentiate between instrumentation and fusion
Lesson 2: The Posterior and Anterior Codes
- Differentiate between anterior and posterior
- Assign correct instrumentation code to scenarios
Lesson 3: Reinsertion and Removal
- Know when to apply instrumentation removal, reinsertion, or just instrumentation codes
Lesson 4: Devices
- Recognize different spinal devices
- Know when to use a device code or graft code
- Know what services to report in addition to spinal device

575 reviews for Procedure Coding for Spine Surgery
I am a visual learner and I appreciate the illustations of the spine, and vertebral segments. I also liked the intermittent purple questions between lessons. That really helped me to commit the information to memory.
This was a great refresher for me. Only thing I would add is to re-read the final answer on the case studies after working through each one so I can conform the final and correct answer. There’s lots of info in here in a short amount of time

Very pleased that OP coding is being addressed in depth! So few other educational webinars address outpatient coding. I have been coding for almost 15 years and find the Haugen webinars to be the best for information, education and presentation.

great resource
This should not be given to a non surgical spine coder not having a powerpoint to refer to makes this test a misserable course
I wish there was a hand-out for this one for me to keep. Very good information on procedures I struggle with.
This is an excellent refresher and resource for my job as I will be coding spinal surgeries as a new coding responsibility and this course has made me feel much more confident. Thak you!
Awesome that NCCI Edits are included. Really like the more detailed material.
I have refreshed my knowledge and learned some additional, very specific details on spinal surgery grafts.
Explained details of procedure very clearly.
This was by far the hardest of the spinal courses and very surprised I understood it as good as I did.Thank you!
Great course! Explained well!
The codes were organized in the downloads in an easy to understand format! Love it!
