As we navigate the fascinating specialty of urinary system coding, this course will focus on urological procedures of the kidneys and ureters and the rationale of assigning CPT codes. Our goal is that on completion of this course, you will be significantly more confident and competent in your real-world urology surgical coding skills.

Objectives:

Lesson 1: Anatomy and Medical Terminology

  • Recognize the structure and function of the female urinary system
  • Identify the structure and function of the male urinary system
  • Determine the meaning of medical terms typically found in code descriptors, urology operative reports, or procedure notes

Lesson 2: Procedures on the Kidney

  • Select the correct percutaneous procedure codes related to the kidney
  • Assign codes for laparoscopic procedures related to the kidney

Lesson 3: Procedures on the Ureter

  • Demonstrate the correct coding of a non-endoscopic biopsy of the ureter and/or renal pelvis, when done with a primary procedure
  • Apply the correct procedure code for changing a urostomy tube via an ileal conduit, based on the clinical documentation
  • Determine the correct laparoscopic and open procedure codes related to the anastomosis of the ureter
