Description

This course completes the discussion of the 31 root operations associated with the Medical and Surgical section of ICD-10-PCS. It is organized into four lessons and covers the last 5 root operations groups, or categories, of similar types of procedures. Understanding the definitions of the root operations and knowing how to apply them is the basis for the code building process. The differentiation between the individual root operations are also covered in this course.

Objectives:

Lesson 1: Format and Organization

  • Define the term “tubular body part” as it relates to ICD-10-PCS
  • Differentiate between the root operations of Restriction and Occlusion
  • Apply knowledge of the root operation Dilation to correctly build a PCS code for percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty
  • Describe the use of the root operation Bypass

Lesson 2: Procedures that Involve a Device

  • Describe when the root operation Insertion is used
  • Identify when the root operation Removal is assigned
  • Match a specific device type to the more generic device type

Lesson 3: Procedures Involving Examination Only or Other Repairs

  • Identify when Inspection can be assigned
  • Name the two body systems where Map can be assigned
  • Identify the root operation used as the “Not Elsewhere Classified”
  • Describe the circumstances in which Control can be assigned

Lesson 4: Procedures that Define other Objectives

  • Identify the type of information available within the code when the root operation Fusion is assigned
  • Describe the intent of the procedure when the root operation Alteration is assigned
  • Identify procedures coded with the root operation Creation
  • Match root operation names to the appropriate definition
