Description
External Causes of Morbidity presents an overview of codes that report accidents, assaults, and other external causes of injuries and illness. This course covers VWXY codes, structure and format of Chapter 20 codes, and the opportunity to apply these codes to case scenarios.
Objectives:
Lesson 1: Overview
- Identify the starting point for external cause coding
- Apply the external cause hierarchy to ICD-10-CM coding scenarios
- Review situations in which an external cause code may be used
Lesson 2: V W X Y Codes
- List the letters that are used as primary characters for external cause codes
- Identify the six elements of external cause coding
Lesson 3: Chapter 20 Structure and Format
- Apply 7th characters to Chapter 20 codes for various episodes of care
- Differentiate between initial and subsequent episodes of care and sequela of external causes
Lesson 4: Coding
- List two types of external cause codes unique to ICD-10-CM
- Use medical record documentation to determine whether an injury was an accident, self-inflicted, due to an assault, or undetermined
