Description

This course introduces you to procedures commonly performed by general surgeons in the operating room. The course begins with coding and excision of lesions followed by fluid aspiration and incision and drainage procedures. The course concludes with gastrointestinal procedures and other general surgery procedures commonly seen in the OR. You’ll be able to test your knowledge at the end of the course with the Ultimate coder challenge!

Objectives:

Lesson 1: Biopsies and Excisions

  • Differentiate between fine needle biopsy and needle core biopsy
  • Assign codes for sentinel lymph node identification and biopsy
  • Assign codes for bone marrow biopsy and aspiration
  • Recognize when an additional code is needed for repair following the removal of skin lesions

Lesson 2: Fluid Aspiration and Incision and Drainage

  • Discern between puncture aspiration and incision & drainage
  • Distinguish perirectal from perianal abscess drainage

Lesson 3: Procedures on the Gastrointestinal System

  • Differentiate between open and laparoscopic procedures
  • Assign a code for incidental liver biopsy at the time of laparoscopic cholecystectomy
  • Align procedure descriptions to codes for hemorrhoid procedures

Lesson 4: Other General Surgery Procedures

  • Determine when to use code 49568 for implantation of mesh during hernia repair
  • Select the code for hysteroscopic dilation and curettage
  • Identify codes for thyroidectomy procedures
