Description

This Gastroenterology Service Line course is the first part of a two-part series focused on ICD-10-PCS coding for common gastrointestinal procedures. Learners will review digestive system anatomy, GI code structure and format, and procedures involving the mouth and throat, with additional focus on the hepatobiliary system and pancreas.

Objectives:

Lesson 1: Digestive System

  • Identify the salivary glands
  • Identify portions of the gastrointestinal system
  • Label a diagram of the hepatobiliary and pancreatic systems

Lesson 2: Gastroenterology Code Structure and Format

  • Identify the four body systems in the Medical and Surgical section where GI procedures are located
  • Select the approach character value for procedures performed via open technique with percutaneous endoscopic assistance

Lesson 3: Procedures on the Mouth & Throat

  • Distinguish between the root operations Alteration and Repair
  • Assign codes for tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy

Can One UPPP Require Multiple PCS Codes? Watch this course preview to learn how the structures treated—and whether they are removed, partially removed, or repositioned—determine the root operations and number of ICD-10-PCS codes assigned.
