Description

This Obstetrical and Female Reproductive Coding course reviews female reproductive anatomy, common procedures performed on the female genital system, and ICD-10-PCS coding concepts for obstetrical cases. Learners will explore the structure and format of the Obstetrics section, review key distinctions between procedures performed on the pregnant patient versus products of conception, and build the skills needed to code pregnancy, delivery, and female reproductive system cases with greater accuracy.

Objectives:

Lesson 1: Female Reproductive Anatomy

  • Label an anatomical image of the female genital tract
  • Differentiate between internal and external genitalia
  • Identify uterine supporting structures
  • Identify normal position for the endometrium

Lesson 2: Procedures on the Female Reproductive System

  • Identify common surgical approaches to various gynecological organs
  • Select the root operation for tubal ligation procedures
  • Identify the body parts for obstetrical laceration repairs of varying degrees

Lesson 3: Structure and Format of the Obstetrics Section

  • Define products of conception
  • Distinguish between procedures performed on products of conception versus those performed on the pregnant female
  • Identify two root operations that are unique to the OB section

Lesson 4: Obstetrical Procedure Coding

  • Differentiate between codes for therapeutic abortion and procedures following incomplete abortion
  • Identify instrumentation used for delivery cases
  • Determine when multiple codes are needed for delivery of multiple gestation deliveries

Induction or Augmentation? Watch this course preview to learn why the patient’s labor status—and not simply the use of Pitocin or another intervention—determines whether the procedure is coded in ICD-10-PCS.
