Instead of reporting maternity care as a single bundled package, the new CPT framework organizes services into four distinct categories: antepartum care, labor management, delivery care, and maternal postpartum care. This change allows providers to report services as they are performed, creating a more accurate documentation reflection of the care provided throughout a patient’s pregnancy.
Among the most impactful updates is the transition of routine prenatal and postpartum visits to Evaluation and Management (E/M) codes. In addition, labor management will now be reported using an entirely new set of CPT codes, providing greater specificity for the work performed during labor.
These revisions are intended to better capture the complexity and continuity of modern obstetric care. For coding professionals, however, they also represent a fundamental shift in documentation, code selection, and reporting workflows. Understanding these changes now will help organizations prepare for a smooth transition before the January 1, 2027 implementation date.
