Skin Cell Suspension Autografting.

subsequent official guidance in the areas associated with the topic as they can change rapidly.

Q: How do we code the preparation of the cell suspension for the SCSA if the provider states in his note that he used an automated method to separate and filter the skin cells, rather than do it manually?
A: The coding guidance is clear from CPT: The codes for preparation are not reported if the harvested skin is processed using automation.

Q: When the code descriptor says “100 square cm or 1% of body area of infants and children” what age should a patient be to be considered an infant or child?
A: Per CPT; for children who are 10 years or older – use the 100 sq cm measurement to code. For children not yet 10 years old – use the 1% body surface area measurement to code. The measurements apply to the size of the recipient site.

Q: Are Medicare paying for the Skin Cell Suspension Autografts?
A: Currently, these new CPT codes are designated by CMS as status ‘C’ in the 2025 Physician Fee Schedule. This means payment is contractor-priced by each MAC. Depending on the area of the country your physician practices in will determine if Medicare patients are covered and to what extent.
