Q: Can additional imaging services be reported with diagnostic angiography?
A: Yes. Certain imaging services may be reported separately when they are performed, medically appropriate, separately reportable, and all documentation requirements are met. For example, some common codes that offer missed revenue opportunities include 76937 ultrasound guidance for vascular access and 76376 – 76377 for 3D reconstructions.

Q: Can one comprehensive cerebral angiography code represent both the catheterization and multiple angiograms?
A: Yes. The comprehensive cerebral angiography codes include the initial selective catheterization and the associated angiography. Depending on the code, it may also include a second angiographic study performed from the same catheter position. However, that additional angiogram is not required to report the comprehensive code. Coders should verify what represented in the comprehensive code before separately reporting additional imaging services.

Q: When can a diagnostic angiogram be reported separately from an interventional procedure?
A: An angiogram is not separately reportable when it is performed only to guide the intervention. Separate reporting may be appropriate when the angiogram is a medically necessary diagnostic study performed to establish the diagnosis and determine treatment, including when no adequate prior study exists or the patient’s condition has changed. For embolization, imaging used only to identify the target vessel, guide catheter placement, select vessels, or confirm the result is included in the intervention.
