A: Medicare coverage requirements for carotid stenting are outlined in NCD 20.7. This is currently listed as an inpatient only procedure.

Q: If embolic protection is attempted but cannot be done and carotid stenting is performed without it, can a modifier for reduced services be applied to code 37215?
A: No. Report code 37216 for carotid stenting without embolic protection, even if it was attempted.

Q: What code should be used to report stenting of the superficial femoral artery for arterial dissection?
A: Assign code 37236, Open/Percutaneous Placement Intravascular Stent Initial, for stenting of the superficial femoral artery to treat an arterial dissection. Codes 37220-37235 are only used to report treatment of occlusive disease.
